1. Summer and Wig Installs

We've all noticed how much warmer the UK has become recently. Temperatures climbing above 30°C are becoming more common, and whilst we might be enjoying the sunshine, our lace certainly isn't!
The truth is, no glue is a super glue. Sweat, humidity, oils from your skin and heat will naturally begin to break down the adhesive. It doesn't mean your stylist has done a bad install, it's simply how adhesives react in these conditions.
As hairstylists, we use the best techniques, products and preparation possible to give you the longest lasting install, but Mother Nature will always have the final say.
The good news? There are plenty of things you can do to help your install last longer.

2. Consider a Lower Maintenance Style

If you know you'll be spending long days outside, going on holiday or attending festivals, think about choosing a style that's easier to maintain.
Closures are generally much lower maintenance than frontals because there's less lace to worry about. They also tend to hold up better in hot weather.
Sometimes choosing the right hairstyle is the best form of maintenance.

3. Prepare Your Hairline Before Your Appointment

This is one of my favourite summer hacks.
If you naturally sweat a lot, you can use SweatBlock wipes around your hairline approximately 48 hours before your appointment.
These wipes work by temporarily reducing perspiration in the area where your lace will be applied. Less sweat means a cleaner surface for your adhesive to bond to, which can help improve the longevity of your install.
Just remember to follow the product instructions carefully and never apply them immediately before your appointment.

4. Stay Cool During Your Appointment

It might sound simple, but staying cool whilst your install is being done makes a huge difference.
If you're someone who gets hot easily, don't be afraid to bring a small handheld fan to your appointment.
The less you're sweating whilst your lace is being applied, the better the adhesive can bond to your skin.
Also remember to drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated helps regulate your body temperature and keeps you feeling comfortable throughout your appointment.

5. The First 24 to 48 Hours Are Crucial

One of the biggest mistakes clients make is getting their hair done and then immediately heading out into the heat.
For the first 24 to 48 hours, your adhesive is still fully curing.
Try to avoid:
  • Gym sessions
  • Saunas
  • Swimming
  • Long periods in direct sunlight
  • Excessive sweating
Giving your glue time to cure properly can make a noticeable difference to how long your install lasts.

6. Don't Wear an Elastic Band All Day

A common misconception is that wearing an elastic band all day will help your lace stay down.
In reality, it often does the opposite.
The band traps sweat and heat directly against your lace, creating moisture that begins to weaken the adhesive.
Instead, I recommend only wearing your melting band when:
  • Applying your lace
  • Doing your makeup
  • Showering
Once you've finished, remove it.

7. Use Barber Tape If You Sweat Excessively

If you're someone who sweats heavily, especially during holidays or long days outside, barber tape can be a lifesaver.
It helps absorb moisture before it reaches your lace and creates a barrier between your skin and the adhesive.
This is particularly useful for:
  • Outdoor events
  • Festivals
  • Holidays
  • Theme parks
  • Long days walking around
It's a much better option than constantly wearing a tight elastic band.

8. If Your Lace Starts Lifting

Don't panic.
Small areas of lifting are completely normal during summer.
If you notice the corners beginning to lift, you have two easy options.
The first is using Ebin Wonder Lace Spray.
Simply spray a small amount underneath the lifting area, press the lace firmly back into place, then use a cool setting on your hairdryer until it's secure.
If you need something with a stronger hold, you can also use a small amount of lace glue to touch up the area.
Remember, only apply adhesive where it's actually lifting. There's no need to redo your entire install.

9. Night Time Care Still Matters

Sleeping correctly can add days to your install.
If wearing a bonnet feels too hot during the summer, don't force yourself.
Instead, you can:
  • Wear a silk scarf to protect your hairline.
  • Sleep with your hair in a hair net to keep it neat.
  • Use a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction whilst you sleep.
Keeping your hair secure overnight will help maintain your style for much longer.

10. Keep Products Light

During summer, less is definitely more.
Avoid heavy oils and thick styling products around your lace, as they can break down the glue even faster.
Instead, use lightweight products and only apply oils to the mid lengths and ends of your bundles if needed.
Your lace area should stay as clean and oil free as possible.

Final Thoughts

Summer doesn't mean you have to give up wearing wigs. It simply means adjusting your routine.
Remember:
  • Prepare your hairline before your appointment.
  • Stay cool during your install.
  • Allow at least 24 to 48 hours for your glue to cure.
  • Don't wear melting bands all day.
  • Use barber tape if you're an excessive sweater.
  • Touch up small lifts before they become bigger problems.
  • Protect your hair whilst you sleep.
  • Keep products light around your lace.
Most importantly, remember that no install is completely sweat proof. As hairstylists, we use the very best products and techniques available, but heat, humidity and sweat are completely natural.
With the right maintenance, however, you can keep your install looking fresh and enjoy your summer with confidence.
