1. Summer Is Officially Here… And So Is the Heat!

We’ve finally entered that glorious time of year where the sun is shining, holidays are being booked, and outfits are lighter, but let’s not ignore the effect that rising temperatures can have on your wig install. Whether you’re staying local in the UK or jetting off abroad, hot weather changes the game when it comes to retention.

2. No Glue Is a Superglue...Let’s Be Real

Let’s be honest, no glue on earth is immune to heat, sweat, and oil. While we use top-quality adhesives, they’re still susceptible to natural factors like increased body heat, skin oils, and especially sweat. When temperatures reach over 30°C (yes, even in the UK), it’s completely normal for your install to begin lifting or shifting slightly. This isn’t poor technique, it’s basic science.
As hairstylists, we always use our best techniques to give you the longest-lasting installs possible. From proper skin prep to layering and drying, every step is intentional. But even the most flawless technique can only do so much against the natural effects of heat and humidity.

3. Sweat, Skin Oils & Humidity- The Natural Enemies of Retention

Sweat builds up along the hairline, especially if you're out and about or on holiday. Add humidity and constant heat to the mix, and it becomes a battle to keep lace completely secure. You might notice slight movement, lifting at the edges, or your wig shifting back slightly. These are all common and expected in summer weather.

4. What You Can Do About It

  • Bring your glue/holding spray with you for small touch-ups.
  • Avoid wearing the band at night: it traps heat and can damage your lace. Instead, use a silk scarf and bonnet to protect your install while you sleep.
  • Only use the band briefly, like when you're in the shower (make sure it’s not too hot and steamy) or to cover your lace while doing makeup.
  • Consider glueless installs, closure wigs or alternative styles like braids for holidays.
  • Schedule maintenance appointments if you’re wearing your wig for longer periods.
  • Be realistic about wear-time in hot climates and give your hairline breaks.

5. Travel Tip

If you're heading abroad, opt for installs that are more secure but less heavy. Closure wigs or glueless units are easier to manage and touch up while away.

Final Thoughts

It’s important to manage expectations when it comes to lace retention in summer. Even the strongest glue has its limits when faced with heat, sweat, and movement. That’s why I always educate my clients on what to expect and how to care for their wigs when the weather heats up.

Summer should be about enjoying yourself, not stressing about your install. With the right prep and a realistic mindset, your wig can still look flawless!
