1. The History of Black Friday (And Why It Is Such a Big Deal)

Black Friday is known today as the biggest shopping day of the year, with millions of people rushing for deals, businesses making record sales, and brands preparing months in advance. But the name originally had nothing to do with shopping.
The term Black Friday was first used in the 1960s by police officers in Philadelphia to describe the chaos that happened the day after Thanksgiving, including traffic jams, overcrowded streets, and overwhelming crowds. Retailers eventually flipped the meaning, using it to mark the moment businesses went from “in the red” (loss) to “in the black” (profit).
Today, it is a global event. For many small businesses, launching on Black Friday is symbolic, signalling growth, visibility, and stepping into a new season.
That is exactly why I chose it for my launch last year, and why the disappointment hit so hard when things did not go as planned.

2. The Black Friday That Was Supposed to Be My Beginning

Last year’s Black Friday was meant to be my big moment.
Not my first launch, but my relaunch, the moment I finally decided to take my business seriously after four years of doing it half-heartedly.
I pictured myself stepping back into the industry with confidence, showing everyone the growth, the intention, and the effort I had poured into rebuilding.
But instead of excitement, the closer the day came, the more everything began to fall apart. Everything I needed to bring the relaunch together didn’t come through. Progress stalled. And I suddenly found myself stuck at a time when everything should have been aligning. Instead of relaunching, I was met with confusion and frustration.
At the time, it felt like failure.
Looking back, it was protection.

3. The Unexpected Setback That Changed Everything

The hardest part was knowing that I had done my part.
My vendors were finalised.
My support was solid.
My preparation was real.
But the one thing I heavily relied on fell apart right at the end. I was not let down because of anything I did wrong, just circumstances out of my control that left me in a very difficult position.
It was heartbreaking, because after all the work, I had nothing to show on the day I planned everything around.
But now, I can confidently say: God blocked it for a reason.
If I had launched on that Black Friday, it would have been rushed, unstable, and not at the level God needed it to be.

4. When God Redirects Your Plans to Protect Your Purpose

At the time, I begged God for answers, but nothing made sense. I kept asking, “Why would You bring me this far just for everything to fall apart?”
But as time passed, He revealed that the delay was not a punishment, it was preparation.
Sometimes God will let the structure fall apart because it was not strong enough to carry what He has planned for you.
That Black Friday felt like a setback, but really:
It was God repositioning me for longevity, not just a moment.

5. I Never Planned to Be a Business Owner, God Placed Me Here

The truth is, entrepreneurship was not even my idea. I did not have a vision. I did not have a big plan. I did not have the confidence.
Everything about this business started organically:
  • People liking my hair.
  • People asking about my installs.
  • People encouraging me to sell hair before I ever believed I could.
God kept putting me in situations that pushed me toward entrepreneurship until I had no choice but to recognise His hand.
That is why the delayed launch made sense later, because even the business itself was not my plan, it was His. And He was not going to let me step into it prematurely.

6. The Lessons That Black Friday Taught Me

Here are some of the biggest lessons that Black Friday taught me:
  • God’s timing is intentional. Even when it feels last minute, lonely, or confusing.
  • Delays develop character. He was strengthening me, not stopping me.
  • Protection does not always look pretty. Sometimes it looks like disappointment.
  • What is meant for you will never pass you. No missed date can block destiny.
  • Purpose is greater than pressure. Launching later allowed the business to be built on a stronger foundation.

Final Thoughts

Last year’s Black Friday taught me that God’s “not yet” is just as important as His “yes.”
If I had launched then, I would have launched unprepared. Instead, God slowed me down so He could build me up.
If you are going through your own delay, I pray this reminds you that God never wastes time, He uses it. The doors He closes are just as meaningful as the ones He opens.
Trust His timing.
Trust the process.
And remember, the launch date does not make the business, God’s grace does.
