Aftercare Guide for Your Install
To keep your install looking fresh and lasting longer, follow these simple steps:
- Allow your install to cure: avoid excessive sweating, swimming, gym sessions and long periods in direct sunlight for the first 24 to 48 hours after your appointment. This allows the adhesive to cure properly and can significantly improve the longevity of your install.
- Don't overuse your melting band: only wear it when necessary, such as whilst doing your makeup, showering or setting your lace. Wearing it all day can trap heat and sweat against the lace, which may weaken the adhesive.
- Use white barber tape if you sweat excessively: if you sweat a lot around your hairline, especially in summer, on holiday or during long days out, white barber tape can help absorb moisture before it reaches your lace. This creates a protective barrier between your skin and the adhesive and is a better option than wearing a tight melting band all day.
- Night time routine: tie your lace down with a silk or satin scarf before bed, then wear a bonnet for added protection. If you find a bonnet too warm during summer, a silk pillowcase is a great alternative. Keep your hair in a loose braid or ponytail to reduce tangling whilst you sleep.
- Shower care: always tie your lace down before showering to help protect it from steam and moisture. Keep the water temperature moderate and avoid directing hot water onto your hairline. Take extra care when washing your face by using a face cloth around the lace.
- Be mindful with makeup and skincare: avoid applying foundation, moisturiser, sunscreen or facial oils directly onto your lace or hairline. Oil based products naturally break down adhesive over time. When wearing makeup, use your melting band to protect the lace and blend afterwards using a small detail brush.
- Use lightweight products: avoid heavy oils, waxes and thick styling products around your lace. If your bundles need extra moisture, only apply lightweight oils to the mid lengths and ends of the hair.
- Touch ups: if you notice a small corner lifting, don't panic. Refresh only the lifting area using lace spray or a small amount of lace glue rather than redoing your entire install. Avoid overloading your lace with unnecessary products.
- Maintenance: gently brush from the ends upwards using a paddle brush or wide tooth comb. Keep your hair hydrated with lightweight products to prevent dryness and tangling whilst avoiding unnecessary pulling around the lace.
- Exercise and hot weather: if you know you'll be sweating heavily, try to keep your face cool with a handheld fan and gently pat away sweat rather than wiping across your hairline. Excess moisture is one of the biggest causes of lace lifting.
- Book regular maintenance: even the best installs require upkeep. Booking maintenance appointments or reinstallations before significant lifting occurs will keep your wig looking its best whilst protecting both your lace and your natural hair.
- Remember: no lace adhesive is completely sweat proof or waterproof. Heat, humidity, natural oils and daily wear will gradually affect every install. Following the advice above will help you achieve the longest lasting results possible.
